Specification Overview

Candidates will study 2 units at AS level and a further 2 units at A2 as follows:

AS1 - An introduction to the Gospel of Luke.

AS4 - The Christian Church in the Roman Empire: Beginnings, Expansion and External Pressure.

A2 1 - The Theology of the Gospel of Luke.

A2 4 - The Continued Development of the Christian Church in the Roman Empire to AD 325

AS Course

AS1 - An Introduction to the Gospel of Luke

This unit explores the content of the Gospel of Luke beginning with the background to the Gospel and tracing the ministry and journey of Jesus and its main characters through selective narratives and the words and deeds of Jesus.

AS4 - The Christian Church in the Roman Empire : Beginnings, Expansion and External Pressure.

This unit explores the beginnings of the Christian Church in the first three centuries, focusing in particular on its spread, expansion, persecution and the development of early Christian thought.

A2 Course

A2 1 - The Theology of the Gospel of Luke

This unit explores the theology of the Gospel of Luke beginning with Biblical Criticism and a study of the religious and political background at the time as well as an understanding of salvation history.  The unit focuses on the main themes and theological understanding of the words and deeds of Jesus.

A2 4 - The Continued Development of the Christian Church in the Roman Empire to AD 325

This unit takes a more in-depth look at the life of the early Christian Church in the first three centuries, focusing in particular on worship, doctrine, heresy and early Christian literature.

How is the subject assessed?

The progresss of candidates will be assessed by their teachers through regular essays,  At the end of each year of study (AS ans A2) candidates will sit two writen examinations ( one on the Gospel of Luke and one on Church History). At AS each exam will last 1 hour 20 minutes and will take the form of two extended essays,  At A2 each exam will last 2 hours. 

There is no coursework.

The examining board for this course of study is CCEA.
