At the Irish Schools’ Athletics Championships on Saturday 2nd June, 15 Strathearn girls stepped out against the best in Ireland to perform in Tullamore, Co Offaly. It is a fantastic achievement to qualify for these prestigious championships and a day where you need to be on top form to compete at this level. Our girls did us proud and gave it their best shot. For some it was their first Irish Championships, for others their last and not all of them won medals but we did have lots of courageous performances with some just shy of the medal places. So we offer all the girls huge congratulations and hope they will learn from their experiences and be determined to keep working hard for the rest of the season and the future.
Harriet Platt and Anna McKinty deserve special mention as they both quite literally jumped out of their skins to become Irish Schools' Champions in the Intermediate and Junior Triple Jump respectively. Harriet improved on her PB by 3cms to win with a jump of 10m 96cm and Anna improved her PB by a massive 37cm with her winning jump of 10m 66cm. Irish Schools' Gold medals don't come easily, so well done girls, medals to be treasured for ever.
Anna has now been selected for the Ulster U17 Interprovincial team to compete at the Tailteann Games in Santry on the 23rd June. Amelia Kane who was unable to compete at the Irish Championships due to injury has also been selected on this team. A fantastic achievement girls well done and Good Luck!!
