Irish Schools’ Cross Country Championships
Mallusk Playing Fields
Saturday 11th March 2017
Well the Strathearn Cross Country teams were in action again at the weekend, this time at the Irish Schools’ Cross Country Championships. Now it was on home turf up at Mallusk but the course got a bit longer and a bit muddier since the Ulster Championships so the girls had that to contend with as well as the best athletes in the country travelling from far and wide to battle it out for Irish medals.
The Junior team of Amelia Kane, Freya Adams, Eve McKibbin, Jemima Thomas, Sophie Kenny and Chloe Browne took to the course first and all 6 put in a fantastic team performance to claim 3rd place in the team competition and took home the Irish bronze medals with great pride. Special mention goes to Amelia who ran a very gutsy race to be narrowly beaten into 2nd place individually. The winner took to the front shortly after the race began and Amelia stuck to her heels all the way nearly passing her a couple of times but all credit goes to the Munster girl for managing to pull away from Amelia because it wasn’t easy to stay ahead. But we are all very proud of Amelia’s courageous run to get her a silver medal at the Irish Schools’ Championships and also for being selected on the U15 Irish Schools’ Cross Country team which will run at the Schools’ International competition in Wales on the 25th March.
Next up were the Intermediate team of Olivia Nelson, Erin McConnell, Murphy Miller, Katie Wills, Aimee Stitt and Ruby Baxter. All 6 girls ran very well and again a combined effort meant Strathearn took home the bronze medals in the Intermediate team competition as well, just missing out on silver by 3 points. Superb running over 3,600m in a very muddy Mallusk.
Well done girls brilliant results!!!
