Music KS3

Strathearn School

We have developed our own departmental programme of study for Key Stage Three.

The programme aims to provide plenty of practical music-making for everybody, with an emphasis on developing technical skills and on being creative.

Some examples of our projects include:

Keyboard Unit
This is undertaken by everyone for about four weeks each year. The unit is made up of seven different levels. Pupils start at a level appropriate to their experience and move up a level each year. They prepare complete pieces, which are performed with recorded backing tracks.

Guitar Unit
The second and third form courses include guitar units, where everybody learns basic strumming patterns, some straightforward chords and complete songs.

Composing Units
Everybody does at least two composing projects each year. These involve related listening and writing. Themes over the three years include Cartoon Characters, Music for Fairy Tales, Music and Words, Blues, Film Music and Theme Tunes. Pupils work on acoustic instruments, keyboards and/or computers to produce their compositions.

Singing
Singing is an important part of class performing work each year. Individual songs as well as medleys or extracts from musicals are sung. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and High School Musical feature in the programme this year.
