Maths KS3

 Strathearn School

The Mathematics Department in Strathearn School develop pupils’ skills and subject knowledge for Mathematical topics such as Number, Shape and Space, Algebra and Data Handling. Pupils are encouraged to recognise how a situation can be described mathematically, to appreciate patterns and to produce imaginative and creative work arising from their studies.

At KS3 pupils are taught in form classes and have six periods of Mathematics per week. They enjoy a variety of teaching strategies and make use of many interesting resources throughout KS3, especially since over recent years in particular the Junior school schemes of work have seen many changes.  (More discussion based tasks,  mini projects and activities have gradually been introduced in line with the Revised Curriculum.) The Nelson Thornes Key Maths series is used as a text book and supports this range of activities and ICT tasks, encouraging pupils to discuss their work with others and enabling students to consolidate their knowledge.

Pupils are given regular feedback on their work through teacher and occasionally peer assessments.  Self assessment sheets are also available for each topic studied, through this pupils are encouraged to evaluate their work, looking at what they have done well and how they can improve their understanding.

Informal homeworks are issued for most evenings, while formal homeworks are issed after each topic  is completed.  Tests are given after 2 to 4 topics are finished.
