The Book of Kells
The Library holds a copy of the Book of Kells, reproduced from the manuscript in Trinity College Dublin, which is available for reference by students and staff. The Book of Kells is the Latin text of the 4 Gospels written on vellum around 800 AD, and it contains a wealth of illuminations including ‘portraits’ of St. Matthew and St. John. It is a fine example of Celtic art.
Junior Reading Club
The Junior Reading Club, open to girls in First – Third Form, meets on alternate Thursday Lunch times. The girls have recently been reading different genres including horror, romance and magical adventure.
Student Helpers
The Librarian, Mrs Collins, encourages students to help in the Library and at present there are 34 First – Third Form Junior Library Assistants who work in two teams on alternate weeks, and seven Sixth Form Librarians. The Sixth Form Librarians help at the Library desk, issuing and returning books, while the Junior Library Assistants take care of shelving, labelling books and other practical tasks.
ReadOn Sponsored Read.jpg)
In the week beginning 1 March the Library held a sponsored reading event organised by the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children. ReadOn is a reading initiative which encourages children to read and at the same time helps the charity to support local children coping with the effects of cancer. The event raised £400 which will go towards providing financial grants to families of children with cancer, support for siblings, self-care residential programmes, as well as residential weekends in a purpose built log cabin in the grounds of the Shimna Valley.
Well done to everyone who took part!
