EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE (ECDL)

Strathearn School is an accredited ECDL Test Centre. This enables us to offer our pupils the opportunity to complete ECDL qualifications.

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is a relevant and internationally recognised qualification for computer users. It is the fastest-growing IT user qualification in the world, and is now available in over 125 countries.

ECDL Essentials and Extra

The basic ECDL qualification is broken down into two levels: ECDL Essentials and ECDL Extra. These can be taken individually to obtain single certificates, or together to achieve the overall ECDL qualification

ECDL Essentials is a Level 1 ITQ Award and comprises of 3 modules. ECDL Extra is a Level 2 ITQ Certificate and comprises of 4 modules. (ITQ is a portfolio of qualifications which replaced the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) for IT and computing.)

The ECDL Portfolio of qualifications has been designed to map directly into ITQ so that when you gain an ECDL certificate you will also be receiving ITQ certification.

ECDL Extra is equivalent to a GCSE grade C - A*

ECDL Essentials is equivalent to a GCSE grade G - D

Some of the benefits are:

·        you will become more competent and confident across a range of IT user skills;

·        you will improve your speed and efficiency in using your computer at home and at school;

·        it will  help you find employment by proving you have vital IT skills;

·        it helps build a career and qualification path, which you can then take to higher levels if you wish;

·        it is beneficial, along with GCSE ICT, as a foundation for A level ICT

Tests will be held during class time over the course of form 4 and 5.  The cost of the tests will be met by the school.

Pupils considering progressing to A level ICT should, ideally, study both GCSE ICT and ECDL.  The schedule for completing the qualification is tight, so it is vital that you are totally committed to the work.  If you would like more information about the ECDL, you should visit the website www.ecdl.co.uk or speak to Mrs Martin.
