Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is open to all girls in form four and above. At present there are around sixty girls who are engaged in fulfilling the challenges of the Award.
Entry to the Bronze Award takes place during the winter term of form four. The girls make their own choices from the Skills, Service and Physical Recreations section of the Award and follow these largely on an individual basis. During that year the groups meet weekly for expedition training or outdoor practice.
The expeditions take place in South Down during the summer term. Girls undertake expeditions in Tollymore and Castlewellan covering fifteen miles over two days as well as camping and cooking for themselves.
In any one year over 100 girls are actively fulfilling the service requirement of three months. The community work goes on quietly but constantly requiring dedication and commitment. Many girls choose to continue their service beyond the required time limit.
The award is a challenging and rewarding part of school life.
