Chemistry AS and A2

The A’ Level Chemistry course is split into the AS course taken in Lower Sixth and the A2 course taken in Upper Sixth. The aim is to develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills related to Chemistry as well as explore the application of the subject in society and the world so providing a better understanding of how Chemistry impacts on their lives.

            The AS specification comprises units AS 1, AS 2 and AS 3, while A2 comprises units A2 1, A2 2 and A2 3.

 The unit titles are:-

Unit AS 1: Basic Concepts in Physical and Inorganic Chemistry
Unit AS 2: Further Physical and Inorganic Chemistry and Introduction to Organic  Chemistry
Unit AS 3: Internal Assessment
Unit A2 1:Periodic trends and Further Organic, Physical and Inorganic Chemistry
Unit A2 2: Analytical, Transition Metals, Electrochemistry and Further Organic Chemistry
Unit A2 3: Internal Assessment

All six units combine to complete A’ Level Chemistry. AS 1, AS 2, A2 1 and A2 2 are assessed externally by exam at the end of Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth respectively. Units AS 3 and A2 3 are assessed internally by a practical exam taken in May of each year. This is worth 25% of the total A’ Level.

Units are broken down into topics that are widespread, varied and build on ideas met at GCSE. Some of these topics are self-study research; the aim of this is develop and enhance independent learning skills – an integral component of study at this level – and encourage confidence and critical analysis skills. Practical techniques are developed throughout the course and tested in a mock practical exam prior to the ‘real thing’. Topic tests are held regularly and used, alongside verbal feedback, to provide evidence of progression.

This course is challenging, enjoyable and most suited to those interested in understanding how Chemistry impacts on and underlies virtually everything from the global community to the basis of life itself. It is open to those who have successfully completed either GCSE Chemistry or GCSE Double Award Science.
